FCGR Testing Services in India
In industries where components are subjected to repeated, cyclical stresses—such as rotating machinery, aircraft wings, or pressurized pipelines—failure rarely happens overnight. Instead, microscopic flaws slowly grow into dangerous cracks over time.
At Subodh Material Technologists, we provide advanced FCGR (Fatigue Crack Growth Rate) testing. Operating out of our state-of-the-art laboratory in Navi Mumbai, we help engineers accurately predict the operational lifespan of critical materials, establish safe inspection intervals, and ensure structural integrity under continuous dynamic loads.
What is FCGR (Fatigue Crack Growth Rate) Testing?
Fatigue Crack Growth Rate testing evaluates how fast a pre-existing flaw or crack expands in a material when subjected to repeated cyclic loading. By measuring the crack extension per cycle ($da/dN$) against the stress intensity factor range ($\Delta K$), the test characterizes the material's fatigue behavior.
This data is used to generate a Paris Law curve—represented by the equation $da/dN = C(\Delta K)^m$—which is the cornerstone of "damage tolerance design." Rather than assuming a material is completely flaw-free, FCGR testing accepts that flaws exist and calculates exactly how many operating cycles the component can safely withstand before requiring maintenance or replacement.
Why Choose Subodh Material Technologists?
Predicting component failure requires uncompromising accuracy. Leading manufacturers and engineers choose us for fatigue mechanics testing because we offer:
NABL & ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Accredited: We operate under strict global quality systems, ensuring your fatigue data is precise, repeatable, and globally recognized.
Advanced Servo-Hydraulic Systems: Our facility is equipped with highly calibrated, dynamic testing frames capable of maintaining precise cyclic loads over millions of cycles.
High-Resolution Crack Monitoring: We utilize advanced continuous measurement techniques, including the compliance method and Direct Current Potential Drop (DCPD), to track crack growth down to the micro-millimeter.
Expert Data Analysis: Our metallurgists don't just provide raw numbers; we deliver comprehensive, easy-to-interpret Paris Law curves and fatigue threshold data tailored to your engineering needs.
Our FCGR Testing Process
We follow a highly controlled, standardized process to ensure the highest fidelity of fatigue data:
Specimen Machining: We prepare precision specimens—most commonly Compact Tension C(T) or Middle Tension M(T) specimens—machined from your material with a highly controlled starting notch.
Fatigue Pre-Cracking: The specimen is subjected to cyclic loading at very specific stress levels to initiate a sharp, natural fatigue crack at the tip of the machined notch.
Cyclic Loading & Measurement: The specimen undergoes continuous cyclic stress (tensile-tensile or tension-compression). High-precision sensors continuously record the number of cycles and the corresponding crack length.
Data Processing & Reporting: The test concludes when the crack reaches a predetermined length or the specimen fractures. We plot the crack growth rate against the stress intensity factor range to provide a detailed FCGR report.
International Testing Standards We Follow
Subodh Material Technologists conducts FCGR testing strictly in accordance with recognized international standards for dynamic testing:
ASTM E647: Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates
BS ISO 12108: Metallic materials — Fatigue testing — Fatigue crack growth method
FCGR vs. CTOD Testing
While both tests fall under fracture mechanics, they measure distinctly different material behaviors. Here is how they compare:
